The Sorcerers (UK)
These three musicians have poured all their love into Ethio-jazz, and after releasing several phenomenal records in the genre, you now have the chance to experience them at this year's Resonator. Their music is a tribute to the genre's history and deep cultural influence, dressed in funky rhythms and cinematic emotions.
The genre was born in the mid-20th century when Mulatu Astatke brought his Ethiopian roots to his music studies in London, New York City, and Boston. There, he created the genre by beautifully blending Ethiopian musical traditions with Latin and jazz, and as a bandleader and multi-instrumentalist, he led a golden era of Ethiopian music.
Neil Innes, Joost Hendrickx, and Richard Ormrod carry on the tradition with their own distinct style. Funky rhythms and psychedelic aesthetics are blended into cross-cultural sonic journeys, with an open mind towards what the future holds. In the future, we are all new; in the hands of The Sorcerers, we're all having a party.
