Seni Reak Jurta Putra - Workshop (ID)
On Friday, November 8th, Seni Reak Jurta Putra will perform at the Resonator Festival, and the following day, Saturday, November 9th, you’ll have a unique opportunity to step into the mystical and secret world of the spirits as they visit the Resonator Hangout - The Root.
Led by the legendary REAK community Seni Reak Juarta Putra from the mountainous regions outside Bandung in West Java, you can learn about the techniques the group uses to enter trance states, where they encounter mythical spirits and ancestors.
The workshop centers around movement and dance, musically guided by the Seni Reak Jurta Putra community. There will be an introduction to the origins of the music, the instruments, and how the soundscape is used to possess—and perhaps free—the body from its physical surroundings into the spiritual realm. The musical style, known as Reak, is one of the original trance rituals that has existed in Java for centuries. The spirit of the horse (Kuda Lumping) and the spirits of the ancestors play a central role in this ceremony. In Java, the ritual is performed for communal needs, with villagers gathering in the hundreds to become possessed and connect with the spirits through music and dance. When people are possessed in the Reak ritual, it is known to lead to the utmost extremes.
The musicians of Seni Reak Juarta Putra are a select group from the community. The music is played on skin drums (Dogdog) and a special reed flute (Tarompet). There will be an exchange of instruments as the musicians perform the dances and themselves begin to enter trance states. The audience is invited to be part of the ritual and participate fully—if you dare!
