At a time when Congo experienced extensive power outages, one could often hear the sound of the large containers carried by the country's traveling oil sellers to bring light to the cities. The sound is said to resemble "kingongolo, kingongolo, kingongolo…".
This is just one of the many city sounds that Kin’Gongolo Kiniata incorporates directly into their music. Many of their instruments are self-constructed from upcycled materials, so the sound, soul, and physical material from their hometown of Kinshasa are present on stage when they kick off the party with dance joy and funky rhythms.
They perform modern and experimental Afro-pop with a punk energy, energetically blending Congolese rhythms and electronic soundscapes. The lyrics, sung in Lingala, celebrate the traveling workers, speak out against the war in Congo, and aim to inspire hope in the youth.
Since the group's European debut at Trans Musicales 2022, Kin’Gongolo Kiniata has played on numerous international stages – from Portugal to Switzerland, through France and Brussels – and now at Resonator 2024.
