El Khat (IL/YE)
El Khat is a psychedelic orchestra that plays on homemade instruments under the direction of multi-instrumentalist Eyal El Wahab. The band is named after the drug widely used in East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
For many years, they have used upcycled materials to create instruments that produce a unique sound, which excitingly blends with conventional instruments to create El Khat's distinctive sound.
It’s psychedelic, funky, and homemade, with strong roots tracing back to El Wahab's background as part of the Yemeni minority in Tel Aviv. While the traditions are strong, inventiveness and openness are paramount as El Khat jams on improvised instruments with modern takes on established genre forms.
