While women have always been an important part of Gnawa rituals, it’s rare for these rituals to be led by a female maalem, the leading musician in the ritual who plays the guembri. Asmâa Hamzao is today one of the few female musicians leading a new wave of Gnawa music together with her group Bnat Timbouktou.

The lively and captivating music combines leaping rhythms in harmony with vocal melodies, enveloped by the metallic rhythms of handheld qraqeb and devoted choral singing. The traditions run deep, and the stage setting is vibrant and fresh.
